Self Regulation in Kindergarten

What Is Self Regulation?
 
Self-regulation is the ability to regulate ones emotions and behaviours. Supporting self-regulation leads to physical, social, emotional, behavioural and cognitive competence.

How we support self-regulation:
Allow opportunity for free choice for all
 
1.  Water/Sand Play, Goop, Play dough  and other sensory activities
2.   Free play throughout the day

Provide structure/predictability:
Announce transitions/announce changes
 
1.  Transitional songs
2.   Visual schedule
3.    Flow of the day displayed
4.    Dressing schedule (what do you put on first, second, third etc.)

Model/role play
 
1. Taking turns in discussions
2.  Read alouds
3.  Games with rules
4.  Dramatic play
5.  Encourage problem solving and working it out
6.  Stand back and observe
